NFC Stickers
After establishing a solid base of contactless card users, some of our customers have started to move beyond the card form factor to offer near-field communication (NFC) stickers. NFC stickers are typically placed on the user’s mobile phone and then linked so that top-up reminders, travel advice and marketing messages can be delivered direct to the mobile handset.
The contactless card market today
The vast majority of transit operators in Europe are now using contactless card technology for many of their ticketing requirements. Travellers benefit from having a seamless, cashless journey, with less queuing time and operators make significant savings. Studies show that fare collection costs for case sales costs operators as much as ten times more than fare collection for tickets bought with debit or credit cards.
This difference in processing costs has lead more transit operators to consider expanding the type of cards they accept, moving from the traditional closed-loop schemes to acceptance of open-loop cards, issued in conjunction with a payment scheme such as Visa PayWave and MasterCard PayPass. With open-loop payment systems, transit operators can avoid the high cash processing costs generated by occasional and out-of-town users.
